We all deserve a safe, secure place to call home.
The Northern Rivers housing crisis has been exacerbated by disaster. Soraya is providing a safe, clean and warm place to call home.
In 2019, Northern Rivers represented 4% of the NSW population and 18.7% of the State’s rough sleepers. The pandemic-induced city-rural migration created a massive house price and rental surge in the region. Then the floods hit… more than 10,000 people have been declared homeless and more than 4,000 homes have been destroyed or condemned.
That’s what we’re trying to solve, with your help.
THE ISSUE
Affordable, accessible and safe housing is needed, urgently.
For properties that have survived the flood, residents are facing mould spore infestations. Trades and specialists are limited, with issues worsening as time goes on. Thousands of people have no other option than to sleep in tents, cars and friends’ homes hours away.
MEET SORAYA
Soraya is providing pod homes immediately.
Pods are reliable, safe and essential for secure living during a crisis and after. Individuals and small families have the opportunity to choose where they live and utilise their rental subsidies on properties unaffected by mould, damage or danger.
“Thousands of people have been displaced and locals are sleeping in cars, caravans, tents, garage floors, evacuation centres and friends’ places”.
‘We’ve run out of options here’: NSW flood disaster worsens housing crisis in northern rivers”.

An issue this significant deserves immediate and long-term planning to protect people, homes and our communities.
-
Pods are priced from $36,000 each. These pods can be placed on residential properties to offer landlords rental revenue, or, as housing while properties are being repaired.
-
Soraya partners with local landlords and community members to host Pods on properties for rent. The pricing is dependent on location and connection utilities.
-
The Tweed region recently modified legislation to permit ‘tiny homes’ and ‘pods’ on properties for 2 years. We’ve designed these pods to be future-proof by ensuring they fall within the “caravan” definition and can remain on properties. We’ll continue to monitor any potential changes as they are published.
-
Soraya is focused on providing immediate crisis housing, yet we are aware of the ongoing demand for affordable properties. After families find permanent housing solutions, Soraya will re-purpose pods to luxury rentals in order to fund future crisis housing in Australia. Our end goal is to ensure access to a house is a basic human right, available to all Australians.
